Abstract

This study examines the role of intercultural communication and community engagement in developing Sukamaju Tourism Village, located in East Kutai Regency, Indonesia. We collected data using a qualitative approach, conducting interviews, focus group discussions, and participant observation with residents, community leaders, and tourism stakeholders. The findings reveal that effective intercultural communication fosters mutual understanding and collaboration among diverse ethnic groups within the village, enhancing community participation in tourism initiatives. Community engagement is a critical factor in ensuring the sustainability and inclusivity of tourism development, as it empowers local stakeholders to contribute actively to decision-making processes and resource management. The study underscores the importance of culturally sensitive communication strategies and participatory approaches in promoting harmonious community relations and sustainable rural tourism development.
